Simon Blake

Simon sees the purpose of calligraphy to convey text and its meaning but also, in the tradition of the decorative arts and crafts, adding visual substance in the process.

This may contribute to the experience of reading the text, giving emphasis, insight perhaps or just pleasure.

Since working freelance, he tradition of the book has informed his work, framing and enclosing the lettering, with the visual and temporal effects inherent, in the turning of the page.  Recently he has made single pages or sheets as framed pieces with colour and geometrical forms, playing a key part as they do in his books.

He tries to cultivate a concentrated but relatively spontaneous writing method so that the effect is not too forced and the writing – if successful – will fall naturally on the page.
