John started stone carving in 2002 as a relaxation to a working life spent mostly in SE Asia and China. Over the next few years he gradually increased the time he spent carving, and decreased the time he spent on planes.
By 2009 he was working only on stone carving.
He was elected to the Guild in 2010 and became Master in 2012. With no formal art training of any sort, John was extremely fortunate to be tutored by Kate Semple, a local stone carver based in Frome.
John draws his inspiration mainly from the landscape and seascape of the southwest. He works almost exclusively from stone that he can source from that area. He has developed techniques for introducing light and colour into his work with glass and metals, and by mixing together different stones into one sculpture.
