David M Brown became a letter-cutter in slate, stone, and occasionally wood, after 40 years teaching Physics, gradually turning a hobby into a small business He had tuition from Tom Perkins, Ieuan Rees, Andrew Whittle and Martin Wenham and now carves memorials and inscriptions of all kinds as well as sundials (165 over 23 years!), acting as designer maker and sundial consultant throughout the UK. Valued commissions have included three in Oxford colleges, and others at Penshurst Place in Kent, the Olympic Park and on the seafront at Minehead for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. He recently completed a large double horizontal sundial, the only one of this type in slate whose whereabouts is known. David was Master of the Guild 2009-12
