The Guild

What is it?

The Somerset Guild of Craftsmen, established in 1933, is a body of professional craftsmen and women who promote the highest standards of design and craftsmanship. Each member's work undergoes a selection procedure before full Craft Member status is conferred. You may wish to consider joining the Guild as an Associate, Full Craft Member or as a Friend, and therefore be able to enjoy the many benefits available eg regular newsletters and exhibiting opportunities. Guild members' work can be seen currently in the Courthouse in Somerton.

Becoming a member of the Guild

There are two categories of membership:

Craft members

Craft Membership is open to those whose design and quality of work meet the approval of a Selection Committee that sits regularly throughout the year.  A non-returnable selection fee of £25  is payable to be considered by the committee for membership.
Those people who are notable, well-established craftsmen in their chosen field, and probably well known to existing SGC craft members, may apply directly for craft membership with or without the sponsorship of an existing Guild member. The Guild may ask for evidence of past awards, qualifications, published articles and exhibition successes.
The right of regular exhibition at the Guild's galleries is confined to those with Craft Membership

Associate members

This category of member includes those people who wish simply to be associated with the Guild and its ethos of fine craftsmanship and fellowship. It also includes those who wish to further and advance their skills and techniques, with a view to eventually becoming a Craft Member.  Exhibitions specifically for Associate Members are held annually, and work intended for these is subject to selection.  Submission of photographs or samples of work is not a prerequisite for consideration for Associate Membership.  However, should applicants wish to send such items, Guild members would be happy to review them, particularly if the applicant is a craftsman, so that an 'association' can be developed with the reviewing Craft Member, if the applicant so wishes.

Membership details

Current membership rates are as follows:
Craft Members:   £80.00 per year, renewable on 1 April annually.
Associate Members:  £25.0 per year, renewable on 1 April annually.

Social events and local exhibitions are organised on an informal basis, and all members are invited to participate, normally through the regular "Update" Newsletter.  The Guild also publishes a twice yearly full colour Journal which is available to members of the public and members.  All members of the Guild are asked to provide support at special exhibitions to ensure we achieve the profile and success the Guild deserves.  Once a new member joins the Guild they receive regular information, newsletters and updates.
